OxCap brings together a team of experienced emerging market investors led by Dr. Joseph Lai.
Dr. Lai and fellow Principals Douglas Huey and Alan Zhang collectively have over 50 years experience investing in Asian and emerging market equities.
Dr Joseph Lai
Principal, Portfolio Manager and Chief Investment Officer
Joseph is responsible for overseeing the investment process, risk management and management of the portfolios.
Joseph spent 17 years at Platinum Asset Management, in which he was the Portfolio Manager for the Platinum Asia Fund, Head of Asia Equities Research and a member of the Management Committee of Platinum. On the investment side he was responsible for the management of Asia portfolios and the Asia Team as well as contributing to the idea generation of broader global portfolios. Joseph was previously covering Healthcare stocks as an analyst at Morgan Stanley and worked as a Medical Doctor prior to that.
He holds a degree in Master of Business Administration (AGSM), Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (U Syd) and is a CFA Charterholder.
Principal and Portfolio Manager
Douglas has been investing since 1996. He joined Platinum Asset Management upon graduation. He started his career covering Asia, before shifting his focus to the technology sector globally. His coverage shifted back to Asia in 2014 when he joined the Platinum Asia team. He joined PM Capital in 2018 as a Portfolio Manager. He covered a diverse range of sectors while he was with PM Capital. Douglas has navigated through multiple market cycles in his time.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of New South Wales.
Principal and Portfolio Manager
Alan was born in China and educated in Australia, and has been investing for five years. Given the local networks and cultural/linguistic advantages (English & Chinese, including multiple dialects), he takes on the responsibilities for China, Northern Asia, and new economy. With his mathematical and programming skills, he also supports the team with idea generation and risk management.
Prior to OxCap, Alan worked at Platinum Asset Management in the Asia team, where he made several successful investments like Meituan, Li Ning, Kingsoft, etc. before they were discovered. Before his journey in equities investing, he had experiences from Citi’s trading desk and Huatai’s FICC division, primarily developing hedging strategies and derivatives pricing. While completing his degree, he was also teaching economics and econometrics at UNSW.
He holds a Bachelor of Actuarial Science and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of New South Wales.
Kate is responsible for evaluating equities across Emerging Markets with a focus on Consumer, Internet and New Technology sectors. Additionally, Kate is the OxCap ESG champion, responsible for oversight of ESG for the fund, alongside Dr Joseph Lai.
Kate spent over 4 years at Bank of America, most recently in their Global Commercial Banking team as a Treasury Associate. In this role, she ran a portfolio of US-headquartered multinational clients, directing client prospecting and execution of transaction banking services in Australia. Prior to this, she interned at Citi in their Investment Banking Division.
Kate holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of New South Wales.
Corey is responsible for equity analysis across Emerging Markets, with a focus on Asia. Additionally, Corey undertakes trading responsibilities for Ox Capital.
Corey has worked for a number of investment funds across China and Singapore, gaining valuable on-the-ground experience in Asia across a range of industries. Academically distinguished, he won the National Merit Scholarship and was on the Dean’s Honours List during his time at the University of Melbourne.
Corey holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and a Master in Accounting from the National University of Singapore.
Jeff is the Portfolio Strategist at Ox Capital. His role is to assist the Ox management team with the investment process including macroeconomic analysis and top-down idea generation across emerging market equities.
Jeff spent over 11 years at Goldman Sachs in the Global Investment Research division in the United States and Australia. Most recently, he was a lead analyst covering the property sector for Australia and New Zealand.
Jeff holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Business with an emphasis in Finance where he was on the Dean’s List during the Finance Core curriculum.
